First State Performance Program

Programming new music can be a challenge—especially when budgets are limited and rehearsal time is at a premium. The First State Performance Program is designed to remove those barriers and make it easier for ensembles to bring engaging new repertoire to their audiences.

What the Program Offers

The First State Performance Program provides qualifying ensembles with complimentary performance materials. Recognition for participating ensembles, with state premiere acknowledgment, will be awarded based on earliest confirmed performance date.

Participating ensembles receive:

  • A full performance set (PDF score and parts) at no cost
  • Priority access to perform the work including recognition as a participating ensemble in the First State Performance Program
  • Direct access to the composer for questions or support during preparation

Why This Program Exists

As a composer, I believe that new music should be accessible, practical, and rewarding for both performers and audiences. This program was created to support directors and ensembles who are interested in programming new works but may face limitations in budget or resources.

By removing the initial cost barrier, the goal is simple:

Make it easier for ensembles to confidently explore and perform new music.

Who This Is For

The program is open to:

  • Community bands
  • School ensembles (middle school through university)
  • Orchestras and other performing groups

Whether you are looking for a concert opener, a featured work, or something new to engage your audience, this program is designed to support a wide range of ensemble types and experience levels.

How It Works

  1. Browse available works and identify a piece that fits your ensemble
  2. Contact me directly to confirm availability in your state. Eligibility is based on confirmed scheduling and availability at the time of request
  3. Upon approval, you will receive the full set of materials
  4. Prepare and perform the work with your ensemble
  5. There is no cost to participate for qualifying ensembles

Important Notes

  • The program applies to qualifying performances based on confirmed availability within a given U.S. state
  • Multiple ensembles within a state may participate in the program
  • State premiere recognition is awarded based on earliest confirmed public performance
  • Participation and materials are granted upon approval and are not affected by subsequent scheduling changes
  • Materials are provided for performance use by the participating ensemble and should not be copied or distributed beyond that use
